Python is the swiss-army knife on my hip. I've used it for web applications (see Django section!), web scraping, and writing desktop apps. Whenever someone asks me how to get started programming, I suggest they give Python a try. I find that python often allows a programmer to focus on the problem they are trying to solve instead of on the code itself.
