Hello, I'm Tyler! With a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Computer Engineering and over nine years of experience in the tech industry, I bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the table. I have worked on professional projects such as using Ruby to process x86 assembly instructions and using Python and React to show public transit arrival times. My experience across stacks and domains has led my passion to grow beyond just "getting code to work"; it's about unraveling the nuances of how software functions and exploring each layer of its construction. Throughout my professional career, I've taken immense joy in mentoring fellow engineers. Not long ago, I helped a junior engineer migrate some data processing code from a React Native application to a Kotlin application. This not only solidified their understanding of frontend versus backend development, but also enhanced my skills in explaining technical concepts in an accessible way. I approach teaching from a "First Principles" approach: if we can step back and understand the foundations underpinning each subject, we can dive into the details of a task or project with more confidence and resilience. Lastly, I view code as a creative pursuit. Is it art? That's in the eye of the beholder. Having something functional is an critical step, but producing something clean and that you are proud of is my north star. I invite you to contact me with any questions or to discuss your specific learning goals. Let's work together to build your understanding and confidence in software and computer engineering!

I am an assembly language expert, having mentored recently in MIPS, LC-3&4, MARIE, PEP/8&9, others. I will explain the concepts and fundamentals that you need to know. For example: how the processor works; how assembly language works; analogies for higher level languages concepts in assembly language; methodology for problem solving. While I do explanations, I don't do homework, assignments, projects, tests, quizzes, exams (practice or otherwise) or freelance. The help I offer is about concepts: knowledge of how processors work, how assembly language works, how we accomplish the same thing in assembly as in other languages, and how programmers look at problems. So, ask me something about what you want to learn: what you don't know or what you are confused about that will help you in making progress on your assignment/project or upcoming test. While I'm expensive for sessions and rarely take new clients for sessions, I do happily answer for free questions of any technical depth posed to me here in chat.

I believe the barrier to entry for many beginning developers is nailing down the fundamentals, and that's what I'm here to help with. The fundamentals aren't necessarily the hardest to grasp, but "unconscious competence" can often blind more senior developers to their existence. As a result, their explanation tends to be omitted from most tutorials, replaced instead with words like "just", "of course", and "trivially". I'm sure I've been guilty of these omissions myself, but when I have a mentee in front of me that's stuck, I'm dogged in my pursuit to identify where the gaps in their knowledge lie, and how to forever sew them shut. And because this road can be a long and difficult one, I also know that it helps to have a friend by your side through the journey; so more than just helping to navigate new concepts and technical issues, I want to serve as moral support for others who are now where I once was. Through the entire journey, but especially at the beginning, I think having this support can make or break, and I don't want to see anyone broken. As for me, I love learning languages, both programming and natural. When it comes to human languages, I can both read and converse in Japanese, but I'm currently focused on increasing my vocabulary in hopes of comprehending more complicated subject matter. In the world of programming, I love Ruby, tolerate JavaScript (*grin*), and am currently most interested in functional languages. Previously I had been using Elixir quite a bit, but at the moment ML-style languages like Haskell, Elm, and PureScript have been holding most of my attention. Things I'd particularly love to help you with include: * Haskell (getting started or exploring new concepts) * Elm and/or JavaScript (building in-browser applications) * Ruby (getting started or leveling up) * Rails (picking projects, implementing features, exploring libraries, etc.) * web development in general (front- or back-end) If any of this sounds like what you're looking for in a mentor, please don't hesitate to get in touch, even if you'd just like to chat. I'll be looking forward to hear from you!

I've been programming for over 15 years. C is my favorite language and the one I'm most experienced in by far, followed by C++, though Python is my second favorite. I'm comfortable with assembly, primarily MIPS, x86_64 and RISC-V. I have a little experience with Scheme/Racket. I'm also fairly well versed in modern OpenGL (3.3+, I have no experience with deprecated fixed function OpenGL). I am an experienced Linux user and developer. All my personal projects are developed and run on Linux. I've also been tutoring on Wyzant, both in person and online, since mid 2016: https://www.wyzant.com/Tutors/RobertW

Personalized MIPS mentoring through Codementor offers a unique and effective learning approach compared to traditional classroom learning, particularly in these key aspects:

  • Customized content: Personalized mentoring adapts the learning material and pace specifically to your needs and skill level. This means the sessions can focus on areas where you need the most help or interest, unlike classroom settings which follow a fixed curriculum for all students.
  • One-on-one attention: With personalized mentoring, you receive the undivided attention of the tutor. This allows for immediate feedback and detailed explanations, ensuring that no questions are left unanswered, and concepts are fully understood.
  • Flexible scheduling: Personalized mentoring is arranged around your schedule, providing the flexibility to learn at times that are most convenient for you. This is often not possible in traditional classroom settings, which operate on a fixed schedule.
  • Pace of learning: In personalized mentoring, the pace can be adjusted according to how quickly or slowly you grasp new concepts. This custom pacing can significantly enhance the learning experience, as opposed to a classroom environment where the pace is set and may not align with every student’s learning speed.
  • Practical, hands-on learning: Mentors can provide more practical, hands-on learning experiences tailored to real-world applications. This direct application of skills is often more limited in classroom settings due to the general nature of the curriculum and the number of students involved.

Personalized mentoring thus provides a more tailored, flexible, and intensive learning experience, making it ideal for those who seek a focused and practical approach to mastering MIPS.
